Laragh School Reunion (1963 – 2013)
Laragh National School celebrated the 50th anniversary of the opening of the new school in Laragh, Stradone, Co Cavan. The School Reunion Committee spent the previous 12 months working diligently to ensure that no stone was left unturned to make the reunion a success.
To open the Reunion, Mass was held in St. Brigid’s Church Laragh celebrated by Cardinal Sean Brady and concelebrated by priests from Laragh and priests who served in Laragh. Fr Andrew Tully, the only past pupil and priest from Laragh NS preached the sermon. The evening finished off with live music and refreshments and a good catch up!
God was good to us on Saturday, the sun beamed from the sky. A bus tour of the parish was organised, guided by Frank Brennan, Historian and over 60 people took part. It was very educational, giving people an insight of Laragh Parish past and present.
There was a display of old tools and memorabilia within the school all day, fascinating some of the younger folk of the way things were long ago.
We had a great buzz at the childrens fun day held in the school car park, where we also held a vintage display and record time tractor build.
Charlie Reilly, Chairman of the Reunion Committee conducted a walk of local heritage sites within the Laragh area. Robert Smith, Church of Ireland gave us the history of the Church of Ireland and its grounds.
Finishing off the day Saturday was a social in The Cross. What a great night we had mingling among all age groups, past pupils from home and abroad.
On Sunday we had the Annual Blessing of Graves in Laragh, followed by dinner in the Hotel Kilmore. An evening of song and dance was enjoyed by all.
