Laragh Parish Mission 2010
Planting a Commemorative Tree
A very successful Parish Mission conducted by The Céilí Community concluded on Sunday 21 February.
Céilí is a Community of priests, religious and lay people who are drawn together by God to evangelise. They are committed to and work under the authority of the Irish Bishops. Their aim is to bring people both as individuals and as communities into a deeper relationship with God and with each other through their programme of Parish and School Missions. The Mission started on February 6. It involved house & school visitation during the first week. The preached mission took place
during the second week.
A visitation team of 11 people made up of nuns and lay people joined us from 6-13 February. Over the week they visited 516 homes in the 3 areas of the parish. Their visits were genuine and beneficial. While there they offered each home a house blessing and invited everybody to the preached Mission.
The school teams from Céilí Community spent week one in both Laragh NS and Clifferna NS. The purpose of school visitation is to present the person of Jesus in a way that is relevant to the whole school community.
The team ministered in a variety of ways through music, drama, mime, dance, instruction and prayer – this gave the children and staff a joyful experience of self worth, a great understanding of the Gospel and what it means to be a catholic.
On Thursday 4 February each school held their own presentation in their local church. Children, parents, relations and the parish community were invited to attend. This presentation provided the children with the opportunity to show their parents and the community their understanding of God. They presented what they had learned during the week through song and drama.
It was a fun filled evening and created a great sense of well being for those present.
On the first Sunday of the Preached Mission, the children organised and took part in the Mass. They read the readings and prayers of the faithful, carried gifts and sang. They performed some of their pieces from their presentation on Thursday evening.
13 – 21 February
The Mission was preached by Monsignor Pat Lynch & Fr Nino Vinciguarra. Following the preparatory work done by the visitation team during the first week, large crowds attended the preached mission during the second week.
This part of the mission focused on the Beatitudes and how they apply to the daily living out of the Christian message. Various times were set apart for the Blessing of vehicles, toddlers, expectant mothers, healing of the sick, young people and praying for our dead.
All of these liturgies were very well attended and helped all present to deepen their faith in Jesus. The missioners sought to communicate in a clear way the message of the Gospel and judging by the large crowds which attended every day were successful in doing so.
Organising the mission took alot of preparation for many months on the part of Laragh Parish which was obvious giving the smooth running of the Mission during the two weeks. We are confident that these two weeks will pay dividends in the future as people were invited to look once more at their faith and to treasure it as an important part of their daily lives.
